Sustainable packaging companies to be awarded

The National Packaging Covenant (NPC) will announce the winners of the Evolution Awards this week. The awards are the only packaging industry awards that specifically reward companies for innovations in self regulation of waste management, as per NPC guidelines.

The Covenant uses the principle of product stewardship, which is the idea of working together to make a difference. Australian brand owners sign the Covenant and agree to review their packaging to achieve improved environmental outcomes.

For the past three years, Covenant signatories have been invited to celebrate their packaging sustainability success at the Evolution Awards.

Ed Cordner, CEO of the Covenant says the awards provide a great opportunity to showcase packaging sustainability and innovation.

“The Covenant provides a voluntary framework, not regulatory, so the awards provide an important opportunity to say well done to signatories who have done the right thing to make their packaging sustainable yet also help showcase how the Covenant works.

Cordner adds, “This year’s award entrants cover everything from cosmetic and food companies to pharmaceutical and recycling companies.”

He said groups nominated included one that ran a mentor programme to encourage smaller companies to become Covenant signatories and another ran consumer education programs to reduce the adverse environmental impacts of packaging once the product had been used.

Winners of the Evolution Awards will be announced on Wednesday, August 20, in Sydney.

From a newspaper perspective, I saw few publications bigger than tabloid format, and many in a smaller format (generally about 260mm by 185mm)
