Chinese industrial information provider Ringier Trade Publishing has recognised material manufacturer, Sleever International as winner of the Ringier Technology Innovation Awards 2008 for innovations minimising its environmental impact.

Winners were chosen by a panel of independent judges and Sleever International says it has promoted its innovations and solutions for sustainable development in China.

The company says it was recognised for the award due to its improved usage of natural resources by minimising consumption, encouraging recycling and valorising waste disposal; limiting air and water emissions and controlling industrial hazards related to production processes.

Sleever currently offers Biosleeve, a fully biodegradable and compostable packaging solution whose qualities have been tried and tested, according to the company. Developed from poly lactic acid made using raw plant materials, the film also satisfies the ISO 14855−2:2007 accreditation.

The company says, the launch of its new family of TPE−G films has increased the recycling properties of PET bottles. Using sleeves developed from low density materials, PET bottles can be recycled into food grade PET using the gravity separation technique.

TPE−G solutions are the most recent example of the group’s contribution to an active policy of PET packaging recycling on a worldwide scale.

Sleever International has also developed new inks that further minimise the impact of printed packaging on the environment. These inks are specifically formulated for heat shrink films with solvent-free printing technologies (rotogravure, UV flexography, and serigraphy).

I flew out of Madrid ten days before that disastrous Spanair takeoff late in August when more than 150 people died. Spain was the last port of call on a 26-day overseas trip that took in Scotland, France, Belgium and Spain. From a newspaper perspective, I saw few publications bigger than tabloid format, and many in a smaller format (generally about 260mm by 185mm)
