Visy has developed a new box lid for fresh produce that does away with tape and stapling as well as reducing manufacturing costs, which can be passed on to customers, according to the company.

The Flex Lock lid was designed by Russell Sytsma, best practice facilitator for Visy who says he set out to create a product that provided a number of solutions and benefits to Visy customers - including cost benefits.

Sytsma says, “We wanted to make the lid more user-friendly, but also create a product that could potentially save customers money.”

He adds, “As the lid is self-locking, it does away with sticky tape and stapling. The customer can simply remove the lid, fold it flat and put it in the recycling bin. It makes life easier for those who work in fruit and vegetable stores.”

Sytsma concludes, “The cost saving was achieved through a streamlined process where the board is manufactured in one pass. It can still accommodate the same graphics and imagery as traditional box lids.

Visy says it has produced around 30,000 Flex Lock lids in North Queensland for banana cartons and will slowly feed the product into the fresh produce industry.
