DataLase launches radical alternative to print-and-apply labels

labels  product launch
DataLase (formerly Sherwood Technology), originators of the award winning DataLase® process, has launched a new cost-effective label replacement solution for outer case secondary packaging, DataLase® CASEMARK™. Requiring no inks, ribbons or applicators while being virtually maintenance free and achieving almost 100 per cent production uptime, this new process provides significant benefits over traditional print-and-apply labelling techniques.

By implementing DataLase® CASEMARK™, brand owners can enjoy substantial cost savings of around 30–50 per cent for a medium volume line with an investment payback time of less than a year.

In addition, it is the only system capable of delivering a consistently verifiable bar code on-line-and-direct-to-carton. Moreover, this non-contact laser imaging process allows for late pack customisation to take place at any point in the packaging line and even within the retail chain.

This means that on-line marketing information such as special offers and promotions as well as brand and product changes can be readily updated eliminating the need for expensive reprints.

DataLase® CASEMARK™ is a fully integrated system which replaces the conventional self adhesive, thermal transfer printed labels and the large character inkjet printing applied to outer cases.

It works by applying a robust, inert inorganic coating onto the specific label area of the outer case as the packaging is being produced. On the final production line, a computer controlled low level energy beam emitted from an industrial CO2 marking laser ‘writes’ the required label data onto the mark area causing a colour change reaction of the coating from white to black.

DataLase® CASEMARK™ significantly enhances production line efficiency via a number of unique features. Imaging occurs without contact with the substrate meaning that there is no physical induced thermal print head wear hence no maintenance is required.

Unlike printing inks or inkjet fluids, the laser-marked image is not prone to ‘bleeding’ on absorbent substrates. Additionally, this innovative process eliminates the need for expensive consumables such as inks and ribbons.

DataLase® CASEMARK™ is an integrated stand-alone label replacement technology. The solution offers complete flexibility in the location of the laser marker with DataLase® CASEMARK™ applications to suit specific line configurations.
