New Zealand’s largest fine paper importer, Spicers Paper has put its current Penrose premises up for lease as it plans to move to a new 19,000sm head office and warehouse at Highbrook Business Park next year.
Spicers has its head office in Mt Wellington and is pulling its business out of four separate buildings to consolidate into one purpose-built facility at the Macquarie Goodman-owned Highbrook complex.

Its current Penrose premises were purpose built by Southpark Group in 2001 and Spicer’s has three years left to run on its lease. The offices of the Hugo Johnston Drive warehouse have already been sub-let to Vehicle Testing New Zealand and Colliers International is now marketing the rest of the property.

Spicers started its search two years ago for premises to house its operation under one roof, according to Colliers industrial broker Nigel Ingham.

“By moving into one property from four buildings, the company will reduce the space it occupies and pay no more rent for brand new premises than if it had stayed put,” he says.

He says the company was able to come up with the best option for its business because it allowed two years for researching premises that would fit its business model.

Spicers financial controller Duncan Kernohan says that while much of the paper sold by the company is for the printing and packaging industries a reasonable amount is also for photocopying.

“Our best estimate is that New Zealand’s paper companies sell around 200,000 tonnes of it a year, a large amount,” he adds. Hence the need for larger, more efficient premises for its total operation.
