A Timaru print retailer and copy firm has gained some environmental credentials that it expects will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Timaru Copier Company, the exclusive dealer for Ricoh copiers in Timaru, achieved the certification through Landcare Research’s carboNZeroCertTM programme as part of its strategy to reduce its carbon footprint.

Daryl Young, principal at Timaru Copier Company, says the certification sets the standard for organisations that are serious about making a positive difference to their impact on the environment, and he is proud Timaru Copier Company has led the way for Ricoh’s nationwide network of dealers.

Carbon emissions associated with energy used by Ricoh’s range of machines supplied through the dealership is offset via its primary supplier, Ricoh New Zealand, which achieved carboNZeroCertTM certification for its business operations in 2008 and voluntarily offsets greenhouse gas emissions from customers’ use of its copiers. It has extended that commitment to machines leased through its national dealer network, which means the electricity consumed by its national lease fleet is entirely offset.

As the first of Ricoh’s 14 dealers to achieve this certification for its own operations, the Timaru Copier Company had to formally demonstrate how it is reducing its greenhouse gas emissions for its everyday business activities.

Young adds that the certification has driven a raft of new efficiencies throughout the company as staff have taken up new measures to reduce emissions in their everyday business activities.

He says, “The whole carboNZeroCertTM certification process has made us consider all aspects of our business life in terms of its effect on emissions. We now consider whether sales calls can be completed in town by foot or whether, in outlying areas, we can combine sales calls with visits by service technicians to avoid two journeys.” He believes that, with more customers considering sustainability their purchasing decisions, the carboNZeroCertTM certification provides great value.
