NZ Gardener, New Zealand’s top selling gardening magazine, has turned green into gold by winning the supreme magazine of the year award at the Magazine Publishers Association magazine awards.

Judges described NZ Gardener as a remarkable success and said it represented real value for money. At a time when many other titles were losing readers, a recent readership survey showed NZ Gardener with a 28 per cent increase over the past year, read by an average of 287,000 people per issue. It is the second time NZ Gardener, published by Fairfax, has won the award in the past three years.

Lynley Belton, general manager Fairfax Magazines, commented that when NZ Gardener editor Lynda Hallinan set herself a challenge of living self sufficiently from her quarter acre section in Auckland’s inner city for a year, she gained a huge following. Belton said, “NZ Gardener magazine has been around a long time and has always been a trusted companion for gardeners, but it has flourished under Lynda Hallinan’s leadership as more and more people of all ages turn to their gardens for their livelihood, lifestyle and pure pleasure. They have looked to our magazine as the authority on how to make that happen.

“The magazine has helped hundreds of novice gardeners while also delivering value to experienced gardeners with practical advice provided in the magazine, e-newsletter and in her blog.”
