A Christchurch packaging firm, which places an emphasis on environmental packaging, in an effort to meet customer demand and continue to boost its point of difference, has won a Packaging Council award.
Pak World won a Packaging Council of New Zealand environmental award for design for its work on chip and burger packaging for Burgerfuel. Called ecolicious, the packaging came from 100 per cent recycled card. Jonathan Flett, operations manager Pak World, says, “Packaging gets a bad rap but it can be sustainable and eco- friendly.”
This month, the company became New Zealand's first Forest Stewardship Council certified carton supplier. Flett says FSC allowed Pak World to trace its card back to a particular forest, which gave it another point of difference. He adds that environmental packaging was the company's biggest growth area.
Flett also comments that as a smaller company, with 25 staff, Pak World could do the smaller jobs. He says that the company works with a lot of small mum-and-dad firms, which many other printing companies would not touch as the print runs were too small and not profitable enough. He contends that those small firms often turned into bigger companies, saying, “An initial printing run of a couple of thousand could turn into a run of 50,000.”
Pak World began 29 years ago when Flett’s father, Bill Flett caught the printing bug. Both his sons, Chris and Jonathan, became printers.
