'Most challenging' job brings Logick success

Silver foil embossed pyramid-shaped packaging -- which “springs” open to reveal its contents upon removal of a small overhead locking stone -- has provided spectacular presentation to the cuff links of Christchurch jeweller Continuum. Produced from a 250gsm Chromolux Metallic Silver substrate, the innovative 125-millimetres-high by 50-millimetres-square-base package required the highest printing, foiling, tinted sealing, embossing and die-cutting precision.
Logick Print & Graphics proprietor David Gick, whose five-person Auckland-based company produced about 2000 of the packages, said the job was without doubt the most challenging he has undertaken.
“The people from Continuum are involved in innovative packaging and spent a long time coming up with a design that was unique for their product,” he said.
“They and their designers were quite specific in how they wanted the packaging to look and feel.
“One of the main production issues we came up against was to develop a tinted sealer that was going to dry on the non-absorbant Chromolux substrate and yet have enough adhesion for the foil to stick onto it.
“We needed to get the foil specially imported from England which was applied to the inside of the Chromolux -- solid foiling on the rough uncoated inside of the substrate was also very difficult.”
Gick said great care was required in all facets of the job, including ensuring the fold-in sleeves were perfectly aligned to enable the package to spring open when the locking greywacke stone was removed.
“The majority of people in the printing industry would appreciate the difficulty involved in producing this job. It has certainly raised awareness of the type of work that we are capable of doing.”
Soon to celebrate its second anniversary, the pyramid packaging job was the second Logick Print & Graphics has produced for Continuum. Mr Gick said he thought the first project was also “a gorgeous model” and predicted that more “amazing things” would develop from the partnership.
As well as earning a Gold Medal at the prestigious Pride In Print Awards event for the Continuum job, Logick Print & Graphics collected an additional Gold Medal and two Highly Commendeds from the other five products it entered this year.
“We pride ourselves on being market leaders and the Pride In Print Awards enables us to measure ourselves against the competition throughout New Zealand.”
Although Gick said corporate identity stationery was the mainstay of Logick Print & Graphics work, the company’s growing reputation for speciality foiling and embossing is seeing it print a diverse range of products.
