Web offset manufacturer Goss is planning to merge its two French manufacturing sites into one, moving out of its Nantes plant to consolidate the operation in to the Montataire site.

The Nantes plant currently manufactures the Uniliner and Universal press series, with Montataire the home of the M-600, Sunday 4000 and Sunday 5000 manufacturing. Montataire is the old Harris plant, that became part of Heidelberg when it bought Harris 20 years ago, and came into Goss when it Heidelberg’s web operation.

The Goss International entities in France will present a proposal to works councils at facilities in the two sites shortly.

Goss says the restructuring plan under consideration for France is part of proactive steps it has taken to adjust capacity in response to current economic and market conditions. The most recent measures have included workforce reductions at sites in The Netherlands and the United States in late 2008 and early 2009 and temporary furloughs or short-time work schedules at several sites. An upcoming restructuring plan intended to further reduce staff levels at a facility in Preston, UK has also been confirmed.

Goss is alone among press manufacturers in having its manufacturing base located across several countries, including France, the UK, USA and China.
