The Lithographic Institute of Australia (LIA) will seek to tackle the myths and facts of the impact of printed products on the environment at a dinner meeting set to be held in Sydney next month.

Well-known industry consultant, Phillip Lawrence, will feature as keynote speaker for the event with his presentation entitled, ‘Print is helping to destroy the planet…a convenient lie’.

According to the LIA, whenever any large corporation or government wants to make a statement to their stakeholders about the environment, the first thing they say they're going to do is cut their printing requirements.

At the LIA event, Lawrence will endorse the proposition that printers are 'accidental environmentalist' and that few industries could compare so positively with how print has reduced its environmental footprint over the last 20 years.

Commenting on the event, Bob Lamont, NSW executive officer of the LIA says, “We are constantly being told, ‘don’t print this, save the planet.’

“What Phillip Lawrence will be putting forward is the printing industry has done more in the environmental issues than many other industries. It’s a topic that should engender a lot of discussion as well as controversy.”

The LIA is expecting more than 100 printers, paper industry representatives and environmentalists to attend the event, which is set to be held in Fivedock February 16.
