NSW printers flocked to Pyrmont in Sydney last week for the WorkCover NSW Print Excellence Awards, which Printing Industries claimed was the State’s biggest print event for 2009. On the night, 34 gold awards were presented to printers from throughout the state.
Philip Andersen CEO of Printing Industries says the awards received a strong response with printers submitting their best work under the theme sustain, grow and profit. Gold award winners will go on to compete in the National Print awards to be held in Sydney next March.STI Lilyfield was the star of the night, with the company picking up eight gold medals including the Best of the Best award for 2009. As well as the category winners, Printing Industries also presented 23 membership awards presented to association members of 10, 25, 50 and 75 years.
Warwick Roden, chairman of judges said the chief problem the judges faced was the high standard of the entries however judges were remarkably consistent in their evaluation of more than 400 entries.
He says, “Items were carefully examined, first at arms length for overall presentation and cleanness of production, then looking closer at the front, back and content of the piece. Occasionally there was some debate as to whether the product had been entered in the correct category, or what the rules or parameters were for that category.”
Roden continues, “Then the magnifying glass would appear, and deep discussion over the merits of the piece would follow. Sometimes the panel members would walk away, then return a few minutes later to look at the entry again, until a decision was finally made.”
