The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) is organising a study tour to Japan and Korea, which the association says is home to some of the world’s most innovative multimedia companies.
The week-long tour will examine how these companies are finding new and lucrative ways to publish and generate revenue from content for an audience known to be the world's most advanced and experienced technology users.The tour, conducted by the WAN Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project, will include visits to:
- Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan’s oldest and largest national dailies, and a world leader in digital publishing. Tour participants will meet with Hiromi Ohnishi, director of the Digital Media Division, Yoichi Nishimura, deputy managing editor and internet director, who will discuss newsroom integration, and Atsushi Sato, deputy manager of the Digital Media Division, who will discuss mobile publishing strategy.
- Nikkei, the Japanese financial daily with a successful multimedia publishing business. Kiyoshi Tokuda, the general manager of the Digital Newspaper Bureau, will discuss the revenue potential of digital media for newspaper companies and how Nikkei publishes across its platforms. He will also present the Nikkei digital newspaper, expected to be launched in 2010.
- Joongang Ilbo, a leading daily newspaper in Korea. Jeongdo Hong, chief of strategy, and Anah Chung, manager of the Strategic Planning Office, will discuss domestic news content and revenues, and the successful cross-media advertising and editorial experiences at the company.
