Three Chinese newspaper groups have chosen to invest in new shaftless Goss Magnum 40 presses in order to cope with increasing print volumes. The Magnum 40 press, which is being demonstrated at the All in Print China Show (which closesw in Shanghai today), has seen growing interest from customers since a number of enhanced features have been added. The Benxi Daily Newspaper has recently bought two Goss Magnum 40 presses consisting of two four-high towers, one two-high and one folder, to cope with a massive increase in customer demand. Lin Qiu Xian 林秋先 at Benxi Daily Newspaper says, "In order to take advantage of the rise in demand we needed a press that would maximize our productivity. The Magnum 40 is the ideal solution. Its features, such as the new multiple web folder which is capable of running up to 10 or 12 webs as well as its new shaftless drives will make a big impact on our busy press rooms."

The Benxi Daily Newspaper is already an established Goss customer, having owned a Goss Community press for some years. This fact proved to be a major factor in its decision to make Goss an integral part of its expansion plans.

The Fujian Daily Newspaper Group also saw the Goss Magnum 40 as the answer to the demands of its business growth ordering one new press. The press is configured with two four-high towers, one folder and three splicers. The group prints the Fujian Daily, Seacoast Metropolitan and Jinjiang Economic Daily alongside a string of other national and regional newspapers at its plant in south-eastern China. The new press will be housed in a sub-printing factory of the group to print the Jinjiang Economic Daily.

Xu Chuan Qin 徐川勤 at Fujian Daily Newspaper Group says, "We have been impressed with the advanced control system and automation features of the Magnum 40 press. Like many web printers, we see automation as vital in terms of increasing our profitability, and these features will help us to ensure that downtime is kept to an absolute minimum. Goss’ reputation of providing reliable products and services was important to our decision to invest at this time."

The Zhanjiang Daily, based in Guangdong province has added a Goss Magnum 40 press alongside its two Goss Community presses. The company, which publishes the Zhanjiang Daily and the Zhanjiang Evening News, invested in the Magnum 40 press in order to reduce makeready time, thanks mainly to the press’s shaftless technology. Liu Qing 刘青 at Zhanjiang Daily says, "We have a variety of new jobs for which we needed extra capacity at our facility. The Magnum 40 press is more productive for us and offers a range of benefits that gives us a great deal of flexibility for the future."

Other recent Magnum 40 orders include four presses from Nanfang Daily Newspaper Group in Guangzhou and one eight-unit press from Nanning Evening News in Guangxi province.

Commenting on the impact of Goss on the Chinese newspaper market, Jim Ladage, general manager of Shanghai Goss Graphic Systems, Co., Ltd., says, "The Magnum 40 is a prime example of how Goss continues to push innovation in product development forward. The press has been very well received in China, and we are looking forward to the interest that it generates at the All in Print China Show.

"Our ISO certified state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Shanghai has seen continuous improvements in quality and capacity which has kept the high standards in our product and service offerings. Besides its successes in the domestic Chinese market, Shanghai Goss has seen more and more export business from North and South America, Europe and Asia and we hope that this will continue into the future."

The Goss Magnum press is a derivative of the popular single-width, one-plate-around Goss Community press series and is capable of producing four broadsheet, eight tabloid or sixteen double parallel pages at speeds of up to 40,000 copies per hour. The updated Magnum 40 was introduced to the market in 2005, along with a two-around version of the Magnum press capable of producing up to 70,000 copies per hour.
