International newspaper association IFRA’s first Asian design seminar is set to be held in Jakarta this month. Organisers say the event will host a number of international experts who will explain how to improve newspapers and magazines’ visual impact and attractiveness with outstanding usage of photos, graphics and design.

The conference will include an overview of innovative and successful ideas of the world’s best designed newspapers in 2008 with some insights on how Asian newspapers could benefit from these models and how to stem the decline in circulation.

Seminar topics will also cover automatic image processing tools and meta data concept, like geo tagging, which the IFRA says are technologies newspaper publishers should study with attention.

The two day event will also outline how design plays a major part in creating a market and how an efficient workflow can help to reduce costs and avoid mistakes.

Additional topics at the seminar include:

  • The Mechanics of Redesign
  • Newspaper design and the future of newspaper publishing
  • Online News Design
  • Golden rules for a successful newspaper redesign
  • The power of information graphics

The event will be held at Mulia Hotel in Jakarta on March 12 to 13 with fees ranging from around $1000 to $1500.
