Industry analysts believe Amcor is close to sealing the deal to acquire Rio Tinto’s Alcan Packaging operations for as much as $2.8bn. Analysts also say the acquisition could boost Amcor’s earning per share by at least eight per cent and as much as 25 per cent depending on the price, the debt and synergies.

Visy was recently awarded the Institute of Professional Engineers (IPENZ) Arthur Mead Award for its Onehunga Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in New Zealand. Sharing the award with Tonkin & Taylor, a specialist environmental company, and the cities of Auckland and Manukau, the award recognises contributions to the preservation, conservation and improvement of the environment.

PacPrint International 2009 is set to be held at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre, (BITEC) during September. Organisers says the event is during a time when the country’s printing and packaging sectors are increasingly viewing efficiency and innovation as the keys to performing strongly in a new global era of competition.

The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), in conjunction with IGD in the United Kingdom, ran an inaugural in-store excellence training session in the UK recently. Fourteen packaging technologists attended the full-day training session which was designed to give delegates access to the Woolworths Newington store and staff, as well as offer hands-on experiences.

Alf Taylor, founder of packaging solutions company tna, has been named one of Australia's 100 most influential engineers of 2009 in the June edition of Engineers Australia. The list, published annually, identifies the country's leading engineers in academia/research, associations, consulting, engineering expertise, industry, public service and politics, according to tna.
