Victorian printers claim top spot in Print Awards

The Victorian print industry is celebrating its position as the kings of print, with the state taking 14 gold medals at last night’s 22nd annual print awards, virtually half of the gold medals awarded. NSW claimed five, South Australia four, Queensland and Western Australia three each. At a glitzy ceremony in the Crown Casino a record breaking crowd of 1200 printers applauded their own, the biggest cheer as usual going to the Australian Paper Printing Machinery Apprentice of the Year Award, which this year was Jarrod Orr from Lilyfield Printing in Sydney. The Heidelberg Excellence in Craft Award went to McKellar Renown Press for its Australian Stamps 2004 brochure, while the Agfa Award for Innovation in Imaging went to D&D Global Group for its own brochure.

No company can claim the overall best printer title, with three printers each winning two gold medals; Webstar in Sydney, Scott Printing in Perth and Finsbury Green Printing in Adelaide, although Webstar won seven medals overall to Finsbury Green’s six and Scott’s five. Hannanprint NSW won seven medals, one gold.

Awards chairman Alf Carrigan said, “During my three years tenure the results achieved by the Board have been very gratifying. Printer’s participation is increasing dramatically, entries and entrants have gone up each year, and we believe this year’s Awards ceremony is the largest ever gathering for an evening event in the history of Australian print.”

Presenting the medals were Melbourne TV personalities Peter Hitchiner and Jo Silvani. Entertainment was provided throughout, with string quartet Boheme, performance artists The Three Waiters and comedian Brian Doyle keeping the boisterous crowd stimulated.

Overall 149 gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded, Victoria won 57, NSW 45, South Australia 23, Western Australia 12, Queensland 11, with Tasmania winning a solitary bronze.
